Santa Rosa / Rio Grande ~ Zulema G Montejano, 89, died Monday, January 6, 2025, at Valley Baptist Medical Center Harlingen TX. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City, TX.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother/grandmother Zulema Montejano (Zule) who left us on January 6, 2025, at the age of 89. Zuly as she was most known by many was born in Rio Grande City on December 7, 1935, where she spent most of her life. Zule grew up in a very loving and caring family which consisted of her parents and her 6 siblings. She then moved to Harlingen, Texas where she lived for the last 23 years but never forgot her little hometown of Rio Grande which she always referred to as “My beautiful town”.

Zule was the daughter of the late Severiano Garcia, Sr and the late Conrada Garcia. She is preceded in death by her son Jacob Montejano, brother Gustavo Garcia, and sisters Lydia Benavidez, Sylvia Garcia and Adelaida Garcia (Lala). She is survived by her brother Severiano Garcia, Jr (Denise), her sisters Eliza Garcia and Maria Elia Guerra (Eden), and her numerous nieces and nephews. She was a woman of great faith. She enjoyed reading the Bible and her book of many prayers. Her patron saints were Saint Anthony and the Virgen de Guadalupe. She was a member of the choir at Immaculate Conception Church in RGC and the Librarian at Immaculate Conception School in RGC for many years. She went on to volunteer as a Librarian at Saint Anthony Catholic School in Harlingen, Texas for 16 additional years. She had an immense love for her daughter, Melissa Moreno (Leo) and two grandsons, Adam Jacob and Albert John (A.J.) (Alissa). She devoted her life to them. She was an avid dancer, just like her father, with her partner of many years the late Cruz Guerrero.

Her surviving family will be able to live on peacefully knowing that she’s in heaven dancing with the love of her life and the rest of her departed loved ones. She will forever be remembered and live in our hearts forever.

We would like to extend a special thank you to:

Leo Padilla who took care of Zule not only as if she was his own mother but as well as her Nurse Practitioner.

Juana Ramirez Reyes (Juanita) who lovingly cared for Zule and always treated her with the utmost dignity and respect for the past 8 years.
