Raquel P. Vela, 82, entered into eternal rest with our Lord on Sunday, November 3, 2013. She was born on February 19, 1931 to Loreto and Santitos Pena of Roma, a pioneer family in Starr County. She is preceded in death by her husband, Osbaldo Vela, daughter Guadalupe Vela, parents, and sisters, Socorro P. Ramirez, Mary E. Pena, Sofia Carmen Garcia, and Felipita Escobar. She is survived by her sons, Osbaldo Jr. (Nora)Vela, Sergio Vela, Javier(Adriana)Vela, daughters, Cynthia (Fred) Rodriguez, Sylvia(Alfredo) Ledesma, and Lily(Juan) Alvarez. She also leaves behind her 16 beloved grandchildren and 10 great grand children. Raquel is also survived by her brothers, Leonel (Angie) Pena of Rio Grande City, M.J. (Leticia)Pena of Edinburg, and sister Gloria (Romeo+)Flores of Zapata. Raquel graduated from Roma High School in 1949, which was the first Roma graduating class. Raquel was such an inspiration to her family. She was a woman of strength and faith and kept her family united. She leaves behind a dear legacy that her family will always remember her by.
Visitation will begin today, Tuesday, November 05, 2013 from 12 noon till 8:00 p.m., with a Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Her Burial Mass will be on Wednesday, November 06, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma, Texas. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Roma, Texas. Sanchez Funeral Home of Rio Grande City will be in charge of her funeral services.
