Rafaela Olivarez, 83 years old, passed on March 22, 2022, with family at her side in Rio Grande City, Texas.
Rafaela was born on June 16, 1938, to Pedro Barrera and Maria Dolores Escobar in Escobares Texas. She is survived by her siblings Arturo Barrera, Mario Barrera, Raul Barrera, Tomas Barrera, Maria Luisa Barrera, Anastasia “Tacha” Lopez, and Maria Elena Barrera-Lemos.
She joins her siblings in our Lord’s eternal glory including Hilario “Lalo” Barrera, Ricardo Barrera, Pedro Barrera Jr.
Rafaela lived a full life as a wonderful wife, caring mother, loving grandmother,
and kind great-grandmother. She was a devoted Catholic that attended Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City Texas. Above all things, Rafaela loved her family. She married her husband, Antonio Olivarez Jr. on January 30, 1960.
Rafaela was an incredibly joyful and active woman. She was skilled in sewing,
loved cooking and was a talented baker. She was known for her “pan fino” which was loved by all that had the pleasure to taste it. She enjoyed socializing with “Las Comadres” a group of wonderful women that gather monthly to share in games and fellowship.
Surviving to cherish her memory is her husband of 62 years, Antonio Olivarez Jr., her children Antonio Olivarez III and his wife Cynthia Macias, Maria Iden Olivarez and her husband Gerardo Guerrero, Jose Ariel Olivarez, Ana Olivarez, and her husband Juan Ozuna.
She is fondly remembered by her grandchildren Antonio Olivarez IV and his wife Ana Isabel Olivarez, Aaron Olivarez and his wife Kimberly Olivarez, Abraham Olivarez and his wife Nana Olivarez, Christina Ramirez, Sara Olivarez, Hannah Ozuna, and Lucas Ozuna.
She will be missed by her great-grandchildren Emily Ocana, Gerardo Ocana Jr,
Reina Olivarez, Theodore Olivarez, Asahi Olivarez, Eleanor Irene Olivarez, Antonio Olivarez V, Akira Olivarez, and Penelope Maria Olivarez
The celebration of life will commence with a viewing at Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City, Texas starting at 2:00 pm on Fri. March 25 is followed by a Rosary at 6:00 pm. Funeral Mass will occur Saturday, March 26 at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church.
