Rafael Treviño, Jr. 1938-2025
Rafael Treviño, Jr., a beloved educator, devoted family man, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, siblings Lorenzo Garcia, Leonel Garcia, Antonia Garcia Carrion, Rodolfo Trevino, Rene Trevino, Paula Trevino Garcia, and Romeo Trevino, Sr. Rafael is survived by his sisters Rafaela Trevino Guerra and Margarita Trevino Garza.
Rafael was married to the love of his life, Maria Elena Gomez Trevino, who also preceded him in death in 1996. Their enduring bond remains a testament to the power of love and faith. Together, they raised four children: Yvonne (Mike) Quintanilla, Yvette Trevino, Stefan Trevino, and Luis (Rosa) Trevino, who carry forward his legacy of kindness, generosity, and devotion to family. Rafael cherished his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
To his students, Rafael was affectionately known as "grandpa" or “el maestro.” A true reflection of the wisdom, warmth, and care he extended to all who entered his classroom or library. Together with Maria Elena they owned and operated “House of Raphael” Restaurant for many years in Rio Grande City. During this time he received his Bachelor's and two Masters degrees from UTRGV. Rafael was a dedicated teacher and librarian for over 48 years in Rio Grande City ISD and Edinburg CISD. His life’s work was shaped by his belief in the transformative power of education, and he was remembered fondly by generations of students whose lives he touched. This was reflected in his being awarded numerous accolades including Elementary teacher of the year several times. Through his love of travel and education, he also taught at the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain.
A man of deep faith, Rafael was a dedicated Catholic attending Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. His kindness, humility, and generous spirit were a living testament to his devotion to God and his community. Rafael was no stranger to service as a founding member of the Rio Grande City Chamber of Commerce. He proudly served the Red Cross of Starr County, Starr County Elections Administrator, Rotary Club, and Lions Club.
Rafael Treviño, Jr., was loved by many for his gentle heart and unwavering support for those in need. His memory will live on in the countless lives he shaped and inspired. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy of love, faith, and service will remain a guiding light for all who knew him.
Services to celebrate Rafael's life will be in care of Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City, Texas. Viewing will take place on January 10, 2025 from 1:00pm-8:00pm with Rosary to begin at 6:00pm. Funeral Mass will be January 11, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church at 8:30am. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited with his beloved Maria Elena.
