MARIA G. GRIGGS
Maria G. Griggs, 88, of Rio Grande City, TX passed away on July 16, 2013 at 3:54 a.m. under the caring hands of the staff at Retama Manor in Rio Grande CityTX. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time of her demise. She was born on October 2, 1924, and was the youngest child of Francisco and Estefanita Garcia.
Maria was a high school graduate of Rio GrandeCityHigh School and attended Texas A & I University in Kingsville, TX. She worked as a pharmacy tech at McLellan's Pharmacy for a number of years, as well as a Special Education Instructional Aide with R.G.C.C.I.S.D. for 28 years.
As a devout catholic, she instilled a love of God in her children. She was deeply involved in service and charitable works, as a Rectory Lady, Catholic Daughter, Vela Perpetua and Sacred Heart Association Member. She was known for her volunteer work with the elderly, reading to them and providing them with lunch plates or goodies.
She selflessly shared and gave of herself, always saying, "Donde come uno, comen todos."
Her hobbies included crafting, crocheting, cooking, and baking. She was well known for her "melt- in- your-mouth" Pan Fino, her sandtarts, pecan tassies and empanadas.
She entered into holy matrimony with William Jeter Griggs, on September 5, 1944. As a result of that union, she is survived by her 4 children: Marie Griggs- Alvarez (Jaime); Peter Griggs (Connie); Joseph G. Griggs (Jenny) and William Jeter Griggs Jr. (Becky). Also surviving to carry on the Griggs Legacy are 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Sanchez Funeral Home on July 17, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and a Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Final respects will be at 3 p.m. July 18, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City, TX. Burial will follow at Rio Grande City Cemetery.
