Maria America Garcia
Roma, Texas
Maria America Garcia went to eternal rest on Monday, March 28, 2022, at the age of 82. She is preceded in death by her infant son Joel Garcia, loving husband of 47 years Jose Roberto Garcia, parents, Guadalupe and America Guerra, brother, Roel H. Guerra, and sister Thelma (Jorge) Ramirez.
America is survived by her son Jose Roberto Garcia, Jr (Anna Lee) from Roma,
Texas, daughter Rebecca (Jackie) Ramirez from Rio Grande City, Texas, her loving grandchildren Roberto Luis Garcia, John William, James Michael, and Kaitlyn Marie Ramirez, sister Sylvia Guadalupe (Martin) Canales from Roma, Texas, brother Mario Luis (Rosie) Guerra from McAllen, Texas, brother-in-law Arturo Garcia from Fort Worth, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
America was born in Fronton, Texas on July 25, 1939, and attended school in
Roma, Texas where she graduated in 1958. Upon her graduation, she attended
Pan American College in Edinburg, Texas, and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She then began her teaching career at the Roma Independent School in the district as a Second Grade teacher and then went on to obtain her Master's in Library Science from Texas A&I Kingsville. America started as a librarian at Roma Jr. High School and then retired from Roma High School in May 1997 after completing 37 years of service. She treasured many memories of her career and up to this day, many of her students still remember her as their teacher. While she regretted saying goodbye to her many colleagues in the teaching profession, she loved spending her time with her husband Jose Roberto and lovingly cared for him until his death.
America was an active member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma, Texas, and was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a charter member of Xi Omega Mu of Beta Sigma Phi since 1978. One of the many service projects that America was proud of in being a charter member of this chapter was having taken part in numerous visits to the local nursing homes to visit the elderly. She also devoted many hours of service to the community bringing cheer to the needy during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
America served her chapter as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and parliamentarian and was Sorority Sweetheart for her chapter.
America was also a former member of The Pan American Round Table and a
former Sultana of El Cid Caravan 106 of the International Order of Alhambra.
America loved traveling, shopping, gardening, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.Services will be under the direction of Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home in Roma, Texas on Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm, and Friday, April 1, 2022, from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. Funeral Mass will follow at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Roma, Texas at 10:00 am the interment will immediately follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Rio Grande City, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Roberto Luis Garcia, John William Ramirez, James Michael Ramirez, Jorge Luis Ramirez, Martin Canales, III and Mario Luis Guerra, Jr.
