OBITUARY FOR LYNDA ROSE GUTIERREZ HELLMUND
Lynda Rose Gutierrez Hellmund, 74, passed away from this life on March 13, 2015. Lynda was born in Rio Grande City on April 7, 1940, to Amado Gutierrez, Jr. and Beulah Monroe Gutierrez. She was the "baby" of the Gutierrez family, which also included Gloria Gutierrez Lopez (Alonzo-deceased), Beulah Gutierrez Gonzalez (deceased just three months ago and wife of Uvaldo Gonzalez, also deceased), and Nydia Gutierrez Borg (Glenn Borg - deceased). Amado and Beulah were very proud of all their daughters. Lynda attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School as a child and Rio Grande City High School as a teenager. After high school she attended the University of Texas at Austin where she met her future husband, Gerardo Hellmund from Mexico City. Lynda and Gerardo married and lived in Austin until Gerardo finished his engineering degree. After Gerardo graduated from UT, the couple moved to Mexico City. They had two beautiful daughters, Alexandra (Alex) Hellmund and Erika Hellmund, and a handsome son, Gerardo Jaime Hellmund. Lynda hosted members of her family who visited them from Rio Grande City during the summer vacations. They, in turn, visited RGC as often as possible. Family members who visited the Hellmund family included Mama Lula, Mr. and Mrs. Uvaldo Gonzalez and their sons and daughter, Rolando, U. David, Aaron, and Nannette, and Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Lopez and their sons, Mario, Daniel, and Roy.
Her daughter, Alex, had the opportunity to live in Rio Grande City with her dear aunt Beulah. Hence, Beulah's daughter, Nannette, and Lynda's daughter, Alex, lived in the same room as sisters for over four years in the 1970s. The Gutierrez sisters lost their mother, Mama Lula (Beulah grande) and Beulah (Beba) became a widow in 1978. Lynda decided to return to the Rio Grande Valley. She found a job with Bentsen Enterprises where her older sister, Beulah, had also found employment. While working at Bentsen's Enterprises, Lynda was able to purchase a home on the western outskirts of Palmview. Gerardo (Elaine) married in the Dallas area in 2000 and had a son, Gerardo Nicolas (Nico) in 2003. Eventually, all of her children moved to the Dallas area, and Lynda followed them. Lynda became "Grandma" Lynda, a position which she enjoyed immensely. Lynda was a very loving and supportive mother and grandmother, and enjoyed spending time with her family. She adored her children, and her grandson was the apple of her eye.
At the time of her illness, Lynda was visiting Alex for a few months. She had improved a great deal in the last two months at LifeCare Hospital. Then, in the last two days she took a turn for the worse. The Good Lord may have decided that she needed to be with her parents, and her sister Beulah, who predeceased her by three months. She is survived by her children Alex, Erika, Gerardo, her grandson Nico, her daughther-in-law Elaine, two older sisters, Gloria Lopez (Alonzo) from RGC and Nydia Borg (Glenn) from El Paso, and several nephews and nieces.
The Hellmund family would like to thank McAllen Medical Center and LifeCare Hospital for the special care that they provided for Lynda during these last two months. Lynda's absence will definitely be felt by her friends and family, especially since it was unexpected, all signs indicating that she was getting well. As her sister before her, Lynda will be missed as a mom, a grandma, an aunt, a sister, mother-in-law, and friend. Her children, daughter-in-law, and grandson will always love her. She will live forever in their hearts.
A memorial service will be held at Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City on Tuesday, March 17 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m. A mass in her honor will take place on Wednesday, March 18 at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City at 10 am.
