Julia P. Salinas
McAllen/Roma
Julia (Perez) Salinas, 95, of Roma, Texas, went peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior on July 7, 2021
at Grand Terrace Rehabilitation and Health Care Center with her daughters by her side during her
transitioning. She was born on June 19, 1926, to Cristina Escobar and Lino Perez and was one of nine
children.
Julia grew up in Escobares, Texas surrounded by her maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, and
numerous cousins. She would share fond stories of her childhood adventures with her cousins to her
daughters and grandchildren. Julia loved “learning”. After her graduation from high school, she
attended Our Lady of the Lake College, Southwest Texas College, and Texas A&I College. She obtained
certifications in education and library science. Her passion for books and reading was evident to the
students she met daily as a teacher and librarian in Edgewood ISD, Roma ISD, and Rio Grande CISD.
Julia met and married the love of her life, Hector, and they were blessed with three daughters Velma
Yvette, Rosa Maria, and Angelina (Angie) Isabelle. Of all the things that Julia taught her daughters, the
most important was having God present in their hearts and lives.
Julia was an active member of Our Lady of Refuge Church in Roma where she served as Eucharistic
Minister and the Coordinator of the Religious Education Program. To the children of the church, she was
known as the principal of CCD. It was Julia’s mission that religious education and the church sacraments
be an integral part of the lives of the children in her church community.
Julia was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Oblates of Mary Immaculate #1978.
She took great pride to be a member of this organization where she served as a member, officer, and
regent. Throughout the years, Julia dedicated many hours preparing banners and scrapbooks for the
yearly local and state conferences.
Julia was preceded in death by her loving husband Hector, parents Lino and Cristina, brothers Lino,
Oscar, Roberto, Israel, and sisters Isabel and Elma. She is survived by her daughters Velma (Oscar)
Zapata, Rosa Maria (Todd) Larson, and Angie (Omar) Canales, grandchildren Anthony, Ashley, Monique,
Julian, Cristina, Michael, Johnathan, and their families which include 8 great-grandchildren. She leaves
behind her brother Rene, her sister Francis, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm on July 9, 2021, at Sanchez
Memorial Funeral Home in Roma. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 am on July 10, 2021, at Our
Lady of Refuge in Roma. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery.
The family wishes to express the deepest appreciation to her physicians, Samantha, and other nursing staff
of Amedisys Hospice Care and the entire staff from Grand Terrace Rehabilitation and Health Care Center
for their deepest care and attention. They also want to express their deepest love and appreciation to
Arcenia Garcia and Elvia Ramos also cared for Julia along her journey.
Funeral Services are under the direction of Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home in Roma.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Our Lady of Refuge Church CCD Program.
