In Loving Memory of Jerardo “Gary” Echavarria November 29, 1959 – March 21, 2025
Jerardo “Gary” Echavarria, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and musician, passed away surrounded by family and love. Born on November 29, 1959, in Fresno, California, to Pablo and Irma Echavarria, Gary lived a life filled with passion, purpose, and heart.
From a young age, Gary’s soul was drawn to music. The saxophone became his voice, and through it, he told stories that words alone could never capture. He began playing professionally in the early 1980s and went on to perform with several renowned groups, including Cali Carranza, Y Los Formales, and most recently, Roberto Pulido Y Los Clasicos. His smooth, soulful sound made him a standout talent in the Tejano music world, earning him a rightful place in the Tejano Hall of Fame in 2012 and, more recently, the prestigious Brownsville Music Legacy Award.
Beyond the stage, Gary was a gifted teacher. For 20 years, he taught History in Roma and Rio Grande City, inspiring generations with his deep love for the subject and a signature sense of humor that lit up classrooms. He wasn’t just a teacher—he was a mentor, a storyteller, and a friend to both students and staff. He officially retired in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, laughter, and unwavering dedication.
Above all else, Gary was a family man. He shared 43 beautiful years of marriage with his loving wife, Migdalia Echavarria. Together, they built a loving home filled with joy and warmth. He was a proud and supportive father to Cynthia and (Michael Garza), Sasha and (Justin Rios), and Gerardo Echavarria Jr.—and a devoted grandfather whose love knew no bounds.
Gary had a gift for bringing people together. Whether it was organizing unforgettable parties, grilling at his famous Sunday BBQs, or gathering around the TV to cheer on his favorite team, he created moments that became memories, and memories that became tradition.
He will be remembered as a man whose saxophone sang from the soul, whose laughter filled every room, and whose love lifted all those around him. His legacy lives on in the music he played, the lessons he taught, and the lives he made better just by being in them.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing that somewhere, Gary’s saxophone still plays, history lessons passed down, and every shared laugh among loved ones. His legacy lives on in the stories we tell, the songs we hear, and the love we continue to give.
He will be forever loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.
