Gloria G. López
Gloria Mary Gutiérrez López entered eternal rest on June 7, 2021, at the age of 93. She died peacefully at her residence in Rio Grande City, Texas. Gloria was born on March 5, 1928, in Rio Grande City, Texas, the first-born of Amado Gutiérrez, Jr. and Beulah Monroe Gutiérrez.
Gloria attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in the 1930s and graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1945. She went on to Incarnate Word College in San Antonio and then to Texas Woman's University in Denton, where she graduated in 1949 with a degree in music, specializing in piano. After graduating, she taught school in Kingsville, Texas, La Joya, Texas, San Diego, Texas, and Rio Grande City at Ringgold Primary, Ringgold Elementary, and North Grammar Elementary until her retirement in 1983.
Gloria married the love of her life, Alonzo López, on May 25, 1952, and was a devoted wife until his death on July 2, 2000. She is also preceded in death by both of her parents, her sisters Beulah Gutiérrez González and Lynda Gutiérrez Hellmund. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Nydia Gutiérrez Borg (Glenn†), her sons Mario Alonzo (Esmeralda), Daniel Saul and Roel Raul (Laura), her grandchildren Terry, Sam (Lucía), Matthew (Tyler), Andy, Mark, Aly, Steven, and Gigi. Gloria was also blessed with one great-granddaughter, Aria.
'Mamá Yoya,' as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. Gloria was a deeply religious woman, faithful to God and Church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021, at Sanchez Funeral Home, 301 E. Second St., Rio Grande City from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m., with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, June 12, 2021, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Rio Grande City Cemetery on Fairgrounds Rd. Funeral services have been entrusted to Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City.
