Gloria Garza passed into Eternal Heaven on May 28, 2013 at the age of 80 years old. At the time of her peaceful passing, she was surrounded by her family and Father Roy L. Snipes at her residence in Mission, Texas. Gloria was preceded in death by her two brothers, Rene O. Gonzalez and Eleazar P. Gonzalez, as well as her adoring parents, Rosa B. Gonzalez and Melquiades Gonzalez, all of Roma, Texas.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ruben Garza who was married to Gloria for 54 years, son Noel (Lucinda) Garza, and daughter Melba G. (Eduardo) Lozano; grandchildren, Brenda Lozano, Noel Garza, Jr., Eddie Lozano, II, Eric Garza, Angela R. Lozano and great-grandchildren, Andrew Joseph Gonzalez, Alyssa Contreras, and Carly Contreras, all devoted to their caring and wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters-in-laws, nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
Gloria was born on May 27, 1933. She graduated from Roma High School and attended Pan American College. She initiated her working career as secretary to Roma ISD's superintendents. She also worked as an accountant for Mr. J. C. Guerra and later for G & G Lumber Hardware in Roma. After retiring, she was a substitute teacher at Roma High School for several years.
In addition to her creative arts and crafts, she loved gardening and cooking. Her entire family loved her days of special dishes she created for them. Additionally, she was a true historian of ancestry, always interested in heritage participation and contributions, especially from her dearly-loved "Loma Blanca", the family ranch.
She was surrounded by a group of special ladies, both from Roma and the Valley who loved and admired her inspirational and energetic being. These ladies were sure to hear from Gloria's passages of love and forgiveness; remembrances of world dilemmas and how we were fortunate in our own lives. She made these true friends loved and secure in their lives because she was their role model of words of wisdom, prayers, and actions.
However, her true passion was her service to, Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, teenagers where she served as CCD teacher for more than twenty years. Her students often presented grand Christmas plays, impressive Holy Friday dramas, extraordinary All-Saints Day where each student represented a saint and she meticulously dressed the corresponding saint with precise clothing and other articles carried by each saint. Her lessons were carefully researched and each student looked forward to her presentations and lectures, all of which carried genuine advice and love for each other. She was a true and devoted Catholic who also served as a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, director for the Roma Church Choir, and a lector for many masses.
Her involvement in her beloved Roma reflected her contributions to many administrations, serving as and receiving an award for being a member of the Roma Planning and Zoning Commission from 1996 to 1999, among other service committees.
