Evelina Ramirez Delano
Evelina Ramirez Delano, 88, returned to her Heavenly Father on December 15, 2015, after a long illness.
Evelina was born on January 3, 1927, in Roma, Texas. She attended school in Roma, Texas. She graduated from high school in Rio Grande City, Texas in May of 1944. Upon graduation, she attended the University of Texas in Austin. She halted her educational pursuit and returned to Roma to manage her family's dry goods store following her father's death.
She obtained a temporary teaching certificate in 1972 and began her teaching career at Roma ISD, while continuing to work on her degree. She graduated from Pan American University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1973. She went on to earn her Master of Arts in Bilingual Education from Texas A&I University in 1976. Evelina was inducted as a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education in 1979.
Evelina was a teacher at F.J. Scott Elementary School for many years. Later she taught Jr. High in McAllen and at Ringgold Elementary in Rio Grande City until her retirement in 1991. That year she also received the Principal's Award for Outstanding Teacher. After retirement, she joined the Starr County Chapter of the Retired Teachers Association.
Throughout her life, Evelina believed that education was important. She leaves behind her legacy in the many students that she taught and the many lives she touched. She is forever in our hearts and will be greatly missed.
Evelina was preceded in death by her parents Olivia P. Ramirez and Eulogio Ramirez, a brother Eulogio Ramirez Jr., and a sister, Gloria R. Guerrero; her former husband, Kenneth Delano; and her niece, Cecilia Gonzales. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Rose Delano Poole and Radney Poole, Kenneth J. Delano, Jr. and Deborah Delano, and John C. Delano; her grandchildren, Cynthia, Miranda, Michael, and Ruth; a great grandchild, Brayden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be observed at the Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home in Roma on Thursday, December 17, 2015, from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm and resumes on Friday, December 18, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2015, at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Roma. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Roma City Cemetery.
The family would like to sincerely and gratefully thank Dr. Raymond Mussett, Sonya Mussett and the staff at Roma Medical Clinic; her current and past caretakers, Rosa Diaz, Maria Vallejo, Maria Elena Barron, Maria Bazan, Alina Esquivel, Estella Cavazos, and Maricruz Garcia; and her nurse, Melissa Perez, and the nurses at With Open Arms as well as the nurses and staff at Starr County Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care provided to our mother.
