Beulah Gutiérrez González

Beulah (Beba) Norma Gutiérrez González, 85, passed away from this life and into heaven on December 7, 2014. Beulah was born in Rio Grande City on December 6, 1929, to Beulah Monroe Gutiérrez and Amado Gutiérrez, Jr. She and her sisters, Gloria Gutiérrez López, Nydia Gutiérrez Borg, and Lynda Gutiérrez Hellmund, were the beauties and pride of the Gutiérrez family. She attended Immaculate Conception School in her early years and Rio Grande City High School as a teenager. She graduated with honors when she was 16 in May of 1946. In November of the same year, she married a€ Uvaldo González, son of Julian González and Librada González. She gave birth to three sons, Rolando Noél González, a€ Uvaldo David González (Edna), a€ Aarón "Ronnie" Rubén González (Naomi), and a daughter Nannette Marí González García (Ernesto).

Beulah had only a high school education, yet she was able to rise to several positions that normally require a university degree. Having a knack for business, she opened her own seamstress shop in the early 1950s, but, recognizing her financial know-how, soon took a job as a clerk at the First State Bank of Rio Grande City. She continued to work at the bank for many years, climbing the ranks until she eventually became Vice-President. Later, she took the position of Chief Financial Officer at Starr County Memorial Hospital. In the 1980s and 1990s, she managed Lloyd Bentsen Enterprises in Mission, and when she retired from the Bentsen office, she continued working with her son-in-law, Ernesto, as a bookkeeper in his bookkeeping and home health business.

Beulah excelled in balancing her professional and house work. She managed to cram into each day as much as humanly possible. When her children were in school, she found time to help them with their homework. She was the embodiment of the "Greatest Generation." She influenced her family by example, not coercion. Her constant dedication is evidenced by four successful children, all of whom passed on Beulah's work ethic to the next generation.

"Beba," as her friends called her, was an accomplished seamstress, always making clothing and crafts for her family and friends. She was also quite a collector. Her collections included antiques, rare liquor bottles, bells, and dolls. She was an avid crossword puzzle solvera€"a habit she picked up from her father, Amado, Jr.a€"and she had a lifelong devotion to St. Anthony, who never left a prayer of hers unanswered. But everyone mostly appreciated her excellent cooking, which included chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, potato salad, enchiladas, and arroz con pollo. Although her health declined, she continued cooking for her friends and family until the very end.

Beulah is preceded in death by her two sons, Ronnie and David Gonzalez. She is survived by her son Rolando and daughter Nannette G. Garcia, along with her grandchildren, Maricela, Dennis (Maryann), Aaron Lee, Eric (Michelle), Hiram, Marco (Melissa), Evanna, Mikael (Carolyn), and Arielle. She is also survived by her great grand-children, Jorge, Zenon, Daniel, Dana, Dennis, Jr. and Ashlyn.

The family would like to thank Village Healthcare and Rehabilitation in McAllen and Amara Hospice in Edinburg for the special care they provided her during these last two months.

A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City at 10:00 AM, with the burial to follow at the Rio Grande City Cemetery. Beulah's passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts, but we will all celebrate her presence in our lives. With all her professional and creative talents and endeavors, she still managed to be a wonderful mom, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin, mother-in-law, and friend.
