Mabel B. Ramirez, 92 passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at her residence. She had shortly before received her last rights by Father Pablo of Our Lady of Refuge Parish. She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Oscar L. Ramirez, Sr., parents, William M. Brown and Gertrudis Gomez.
Mabel is survived by her sons, Oscar, Jr. (Maria Teresa) from Roma, George (Cynthia) from Edinburg, and Jackie (Becky) from Rio Grande City. Her grandchildren, Oscar, III, Jose Alexandro, Luis Carlos, Veronica, (Patrick Garcia), Bianca, John William, James Michael, Kaitlyn Marie. Her great grandchildren, Gabriela Lauren, Michael Benjamin, Ava Loralee Garcia. Sisters Esther Brown, Doris (Ruben) Munoz, and brother Albert (Iselda) Brown and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mabel was born on February 3, 1932, in Rio Grande City. She graduated from Rio High School in 1950 and was a recipient of a business administration scholarship. After graduating in July 1951, from Durham’s Business College in San Antonio, she entered the postal service the following month. Mabel completed 37 years of postal service with the last remaining years as the Postmaster in Roma. A dream she had at a young age was to follow in the footsteps of Guillermo A. Ramirez, the father of her late husband, who was Postmaster of Roma, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Mabel was an active member of Our Lady of Refuge Church in Roma, where she and her husband sang in the choir. She also volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She devoted all her time to her sons and their children. She was not an outdoor person but spent her days off taking her sons hunting, fishing, and shopping at sporting goods stores. She prayed the rosary daily and passed that value on to her children. Her greatest pride was her family.
Services will be under the direction of Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home in Roma Texas on Sunday, May 5, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m., and Monday, May 6, 2024, from 8:30 to 9:30 am. Funeral Mass will follow at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Roma at 10:00 am. Interment will immediately follow at Roma Cemetery.
