Alberto Barrera

Alberto Barrera, 87, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018,
at Starr County Memorial Hospital in Rio Grande City, TX.
Alberto was born on August 17, 1930, in Rio Grande City, TX.
He graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1948,
attended Pan American Junior College in Edinburg, TX and then transferred to Texas A&I College in Kingsville, TX and graduated in 1952. Right after his graduation, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and in 1954, he received an honorable discharge. Alberto had over 52 years' experience as an educator with the Rio Grande City CISD, Pan American University at Edinburg, TX and STC in Rio Grande City, TX. He was also a folklorist and an artist who performed his own compositions in Spain, Mexico and though out the United States. He also did extensive studies while attending Universities such as Colgate University, Oklahoma State University, Universidad de Mexico, University of North Texas,
Universidad de Burgos España and La Universidad de Madrid en España.
Alberto is preceded in death by his parents
Bonifacio & Antonia Barrera, his brothers Dr. Eduardo Barrera,
Bonifacio Barrera, Benicio Barrera, and Rogelio Barrera.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Celia G. Barrera, his four children
Armandina (Jose Manuel) Villarreal of Rio Grande City, Alberto (Rebecca) Barrera Jr., of Rio Grande City, Arnoldo (Norma) Barrera of Kingsville, and Ambarina (Daniel) Ramirez of Rio Grande City,
8 grandchildren: José Manuel II, Justin Luis (Rachel),
Jocelin Bernadette Villarreal. Alberto III, Adan Ariel, Armando Luis and Araceli Amanda Barrera. Connor Cruz Ramirez, one great-grandchild.
Juliette Marie Villarreal, two sisters Angelica (Harry)
Brown from Rio Grande City and Sylvia (Eddie) Buendia from El Paso.
Sanchez Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
